How Do Dental Implants Work?

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Missing teeth for any reason is more than just a cosmetic problem. Not having a full set of permanent teeth can cause bone loss in the jaw and even difficulties chewing or talking. While there are many options to temporarily or permanently replace missing teeth, dental implants are by far the most permanent and reliable. If you are missing a tooth or multiple teeth, you might be wondering how dental implants work and if they are a good treatment option for you.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are a permanent way to replace your missing teeth. Similar to a natural tooth root, an implant anchors and supports the outermost visible part of an artificial tooth. It also rests in the jawbone, where it slowly fuses with the surrounding bone tissue, known as osseointegration.

Dental implants can be crafted from several types of material. Most are made of titanium, zirconium-coated titanium, or zirconium oxide. Traditionally, artificial teeth supported by dental implants have three different parts:

  • The implant: Sometimes called the post, the tooth implant acts as the root of a natural tooth, anchoring the portion of the artificial tooth that is visible above the gums.
  • The abutment: A connector that links the implant with the outermost portion of the tooth.
  • The outer tooth: This portion can be a dental crown, a bridge, or sometimes a set of dentures. It’s the portion of the artificial tooth used for chewing, speaking, and smiling.

While not a natural tooth, dental implants are often the closest treatment option to a natural tooth. They offer several benefits and can restore your mouth and smile for a lifetime if properly cared for.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

Can Dentures Be Turned Into Implants?

Yes, some types of dentures can be retrofitted into an implant-supported denture, called an overdenture. It might be possible to have implants placed beneath existing dentures to help stabilize and support those dentures. However, this only works if the current dentures are in excellent condition. It’s imperative to consult with one of our expert prosthodontists to have your existing dentures carefully examined to determine the best treatment plan for you.

What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

Everyone is born with two sets of teeth: baby (or milk) teeth and adult–permanent teeth. When a single permanent tooth or multiple teeth are lost due to dental decay, gum disease, or even trauma, dental implants can replace them as the 3rd set of fixed teeth.

Dental implants are made of titanium and are immune to dental decay. They can last a lifetime and can enhance your appearance, boost your confidence, and give you back the ability to eat the foods you love and have an active lifestyle– all without stressing about your teeth.
